Massage

Reading Your Body

By understanding your needs and concerns, we will work with you to develop a massage program that is unique to you, whether it’s for a one-time visit or a longer-term course. You will never receive a “standard” treatment here but rather one that’s tailor-made for you. Massage is meant to enhance function, aid in the healing process, decrease muscle reflex activity, and promote relaxation and well being.

We do this, first by discussing your own feelings and wishes, then, through the sense of touch, identifying body areas and musculature structures that require attention. We then recommend and apply the treatment that responds to your needs. The focus is to help each client find optimal function.

The techniques we use include:

  • Structural integration
This addresses the whole body, using stretching, release of tension in superficial and deeper muscles and the surrounding connective tissues (myofascial release) and using sustained pressure on muscle nodules that are restricting movement (trigger point work). This helps the body to find its natural balance, alignment, length, and ease.
  • Swedish massage
The classic stress relief and relaxation treatment, using long, gliding strokes, with aromatherapy, and hydrotherapy. This is good for creating balance in the nervous system, for lymph flow and circulation.
  • Deep Tissue
Unlike classic massage therapy, which is used for relaxation, deep tissue massage usually focuses on a specific problem, such as: chronic pain, injury recovery, limited mobility, posture problems, and the like. Chronic muscle tension or injury can create adhesions (bands of painful, rigid tissue) in muscles, tendons, and ligaments. Deep tissue massage works by physically breaking down these adhesions to relieve pain and restore normal movement. One can sometimes experience new muscle ache for a couple of days and then be pain-free.
  • Prenatal Massage
Prenatal massage, like regular massage, is to relax tense muscles, ease sore spots, improve circulation and mobility. Additionally, it is more specific to the needs of pregnant women and their changing bodies. It is important to provide the proper equipment to fully support the mother while she receives massage.
  • Cupping Therapy
Is the oldest and most globally practiced medical treatment in human history. It pulls stagnation out of tissues and brings it to the skin level by opening the capillary beds and surfacing old cellular debris. The body can then eliminate toxicity through the lymphatic, and circulatory system and in addition, it will bring fresh, revitalizing blood to stagnant areas.
  • CranioSacral Therapy
Using a light touch which is generally no greater than 5 grams – about the weight of a nickel – practitioners release restrictions in the soft tissues that surround the central nervous system. CST is increasingly used as a preventive health measure for its ability to bolster resistance to disease, and it’s effective for a wide range of medical problems associated with pain and dysfunction.
  • Special needs
We do insurance work for auto accident victims, medical insurance, and workers comp, using a form of structural integration, modified to take account of localized trauma in such injuries as whiplash and back strain. We can work in partnership with chiropractic treatment and physical therapy.

We maintain regular contact with our clients, checking on the outcome of treatments and adjusting their programs accordingly.
